How to Keep Your Bed Sheets From Ripping, Pilling, and Falling Apart

Posted by Cyndi, The Founder on

New sheets are expensive, setting you back anywhere from $39 to $249 or more, so you want them to last. Here are a few tips on how to keep your sheets from ripping, pilling, and falling apart:

Start with quality sheets. Sheets come in many different materials these days including cotton, linen, silk, bamboo, eucalyptus, rayon, microfiber, blends, and synthetics. You'll want to research the type of fabric you are interested in, noting that certain fabrics -- such as bamboo, eucalyptus, and rayon -- can become very weak in laundering. A quality set of 100% cotton sheets has proved to be the most durable choice for bed sheets.

Always, always, always follow the fabric care instructions of your particular sheets. The "Bedding", "Sanitize", "Allergen", "Heavy-Duty", "Bulky", "Whites", "Quick Wash", "Cottons", "High-Spin", and "High-Heat" settings on your appliances may not be compatible with your fabric care instructions. Using these setting can both immediately and cumulatively damage your sheets. Most sheets require the "Gentle/Delicates" or "Normal" setting using cold or warm water, no bleach or fabric softener, and a low or warm heat dry cycle. If you don't follow the fabric care instructions every single time, you are likely shortening the life span of your sheets. Some fabrics -- such as silk -- may require dry cleaning only.

Avoid chlorine bleach which weakens fibers and can yellow fabrics. Some sheets specifically state they aren't to be washed with fabric softener.

Don’t over-dry your sheets or use a high heat dryer which can cause the fibers to break.

Ditch the dryer balls which beat your laundry up and can weaken the fabric.

Reduce abrasion while you're sleeping. Pilling and tears often result from friction. Try sleeping with socks on calloused feet and long pajama pants on stubbled legs to reduce abrasion while you sleep.

Reduce abrasion in the laundry by using Wad-Free® for Bed Sheets. Wet fibers of certain fabrics can be fragile. When sheets twist and tangle — either in the washing machine or in the dryer —  this causes friction which stresses the fibers in their fragile state. The result is pilling of the sheets, loosening of stitching, and tearing right through the sheet itself. To prevent this, use Wad-Free® for Bed Sheets, the new laundry gadget that keeps sheets from tangling, twisting, and balling-up in both the washing machine and in the dryer.*

Following proper fabric care instructions, Wad-Free for Bed Sheets helps preserve your sheets, and it also keeps your properly-loaded washer from going off-balance. You'll get cleaner sheets that dry up to 75% faster...with fewer wrinkles. Wad-Free helps prolong the life of both your beds sheets and your appliances.

Wad-Free for Bed Sheets is easy-to-use, reusable, and made in the USA out of non-toxic plastic. Wad-Free for Bed Sheets is safe for all appliances and sheets when following product and fabric care instructions, and works on any size flat or fitted sheet.
