How to Save Energy When Doing Laundry

Posted by Cynthia Bray on

3 Quick and Easy Laundry Tips that will cut your energy bill and save you money

With energy rates rising, we’re all looking for ways to reduce our energy consumption, and save money. You might be surprised to learn that the laundry process is a big energy hog. Americans spend around 10% of their energy bill on laundry, according to Noah Horowitz, senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council! But with some simple changes, everyone can reduce their energy consumption and lower their bills.

  1. Use cold water in the washing machine. Most of the energy that goes to run the washer is used to heat the water. By turning the water temperature down to cold, you can save up to 90%! Don’t worry that your clothes won’t come out clean; much of the laundry detergent on the market these days is formulated to work best in cold water, which can be boosted with a bleach alternative such as OxiClean. The only time you might need a warmer temperature would be for an oily stain. By running your washer with cold water, you will not only save energy, but your fabrics will last longer, too!
  2. Turn the heat in your dryer down to low. Most of the energy used in the laundry process goes toward the dryer, and most of that energy goes to heating the air. Turning the dryer heat setting down to low heat well save a lot of energy, even if you have to run the dryer for a longer period of time. And again, your fabrics will last longer without the harsh heat of the dryer.
  3. Use Wad-Free® for Bed Sheets when doing your sheets. You know how your sheets twist, tangle, and roll up in the laundry? Not only is that annoying, it’s really wasteful! Sometimes you end up running the dryer over and over for the sheets to dry evenly – a costly nuisance given the USA electricity cost to run the dryer for an hour averages 58¢...and can be up to $1.60 in California!* And if you happen to leave sheets in the dryer overnight thinking they were dry – only to find out they were wadded into a damp ball – that moldly smell can set in…forcing you to re-wash and re-dry the entire load! Wad-Free for Bed Sheets puts an end to all of this! Wad-Free prevents sheets from tangling, twisting, and balling-up in both the washing machine and the dryer, so the sheets come out cleaner, the washer stays balanced, and sheets dry up to 75% faster…with fewer wrinkles! Plus, with Wad-Free, you can run loads at capacity, and even run mixed loads…so that means you can run fewer loads! Fewer loads means less water, less detergent, and less energy in both the washing machine and dryer. Wad-Free saves you time, money, energy...and a lot of laundry frustrations! With Wad-Free, washing your sheets is no longer an all day affair!
